Returning To The Office Is Costing A Fortune

The cost of returning to the office is soaring, according to a recent report by Owl Labs, a videoconference company. On average, workers shell out $51 per day when they head to the workplace. This sharp increase in expenses has caught the attention of economists like Robert Strauss from Carnegie Mellon University, who notes that office work has become substantially more expensive post-pandemic.

The breakdown of these costs reveals that office workers spend $16 on lunch, $14 on commuting, $13 on breakfast and coffee, and $8 on parking each day. Those with pets incur an additional $20 daily for pet care. For full-time office workers, this translates to approximately $1,020 per month, while hybrid workers spend around $408 monthly. Given these rising expenses, it's no surprise that the top perk desired by hybrid employees to return to in-person work is having their commuting costs covered. Sara Hargreaves, an entrepreneur at Scribe, recognizes the burden of commuting and provides special parking passes to her employees, some of whom face lengthy commutes of two hours or more. However, despite the financial strain and logistical challenges, employers, including the Federal Government, are pushing for office returns.

This pressure has sparked debates about productivity and the necessity of in-office work. Some argue that remote work is less productive, citing a study from the National Bureau of Economic Research that found remote workers to be 18 percent less productive than in-person peers. While some companies continue to embrace hybrid models, others, like Farmers Group, are demanding a full return to the office, prompting backlash from employees who had relocated under the assumption of remote work continuation. Nevertheless, the trend shows a significant increase in employees returning to the office, with 66 percent now back five days a week, up from 41 percent last year. Despite the push for full returns, Strauss advocates for a hybrid working model that allows employees to balance home and office work.

As the debate over remote versus in-office work continues, it's clear that the post-pandemic workplace landscape is evolving, with employees and employers navigating the challenges and opportunities of remote and traditional work settings.
